Aquatic Weed and Algae Management

Welcome to this CEU on Aquatic Weed and Algae Management. The purpose of this recertification CEU is to be used as an essential information source for managing vegetation in ponds, lakes, canals, retention areas, and irrigation systems. As such, attention must be given to the classification of aquatic plants by growth habit, the identification of the target before treatment, and the selection of the correct herbicide for the plant, the site, and the water conditions. Special emphasis is placed on calculating treatments in water rather than on acres, preventing oxygen depletion and fish kills, and observing the water use restrictions that govern treated water. • Identify submersed, floating-leaved, emersed, free-floating, and marginal plants and explain how growth habit governs control.
• Identify planktonic, filamentous, and chara algae and explain why all algaecides act only on contact.
• Explain the difference between contact and systemic herbicides and select the correct product for the target and site.
• Calculate water volume in acre-feet, surface area, and herbicide concentrations in parts per million and parts per billion.
• Describe how dissolved oxygen depletion causes fish kills and how sectional treatment and timing prevent them.
