Weed Identification and Herbicide Principles

Welcome to this CEU on Weed Identification and Herbicide Principles. The purpose of this recertification CEU is to be used as an essential information source for identifying weeds correctly and understanding the herbicide principles that follow from that identification. As such, attention must be given to plant classification, life cycles, and the growth stages at which each type of weed is most susceptible. Special emphasis is placed on herbicide selectivity, the distinction between preemergence and postemergence applications, and the legal obligations that accompany noxious weed control. Go ahead and get started!

Learning Objectives:

The following is a list of the key points to be discussed within this course.

  • Classify weeds as grasses, broadleaves, and sedges and identify the plant parts used for identification.
  • Explain annual, biennial, and perennial life cycles and the timing implications of each.
  • Explain herbicide selectivity, the conditions under which selectivity fails, and the three mechanisms that produce it.
  • Describe preemergence and postemergence applications, including the requirements for activation and the causes of failure.
  • Explain noxious weed listings, the legal duty to control listed weeds, and why the label must list the target weed or site.
