Welcome to this CEU covering Cockroach Biology and Management. Cockroaches are among the most common and most important structural pests, and they are far more than a nuisance — they contaminate food, and they trigger asthma and allergies. The German cockroach in particular generates more pest control service calls, and more control failures, than almost any other household pest. Successful control depends on correctly identifying the species, understanding its biology and behavior, and applying an integrated program built around sanitation, inspection, and modern baiting. This course covers all of it, with the depth a structural applicator needs to build and carry out an effective program. Go ahead and get started!
Learning Objectives:
The following is a list of the key points to be discussed within this course.
- Understand why cockroaches are a public health concern, including their role in allergen exposure and asthma.
- Understand cockroach biology and the gradual metamorphosis life cycle, including the egg capsule, or ootheca.
- Identify the four principal structural cockroach species and distinguish them from one another.
- Understand why the German cockroach is the most important indoor pest and why it is so difficult to control.
- Understand cockroach behavior, harborage preferences, and the food and water they require.
- Conduct a thorough inspection and use monitors to locate infestations and measure results.
- Apply sanitation and non-chemical control as the foundation of an IPM program.
- Understand baits as the cornerstone of modern cockroach control, and how to place them correctly.
- Understand other chemical control options, insecticide resistance, and bait aversion.
- Apply a mode-of-action rotation strategy to manage resistance in German cockroach populations.
- Manage cockroaches in commercial and multi-unit accounts.
- Educate clients and prevent reintroduction, and maintain the program through follow-up.

New York License Requirements
Commercial Applicator Requirements — 3 Year Cycle
Category 7A – Structural & Rodent Control – 12 credits
At least 3 credits must be 7A-specific. The remaining 9 may be Core, 7A, or any combination.
Category 7C – Termite – 8 credits
At least 2 credits must be 7C-specific. The remaining 6 may be Core, 7C, or any combination.
Category 3A – Ornamentals, Shade Trees & Turf – 10 credits
At least 2.5 credits must be 3A-specific. The remaining 7.5 may be Core, 3A, or any combination.
Category 5B – Aquatic Insect & Misc. Aquatic Organisms Control – 8 credits
At least 2 credits must be 5B-specific. The remaining 6 may be Core, 5B, or any combination.
Commercial applicators on a three-year cycle may earn all of their recertification credits within a single calendar year.
Private Applicator Requirements — 5 Year Cycle
Categories 21–25 – 10 credits each
21 Field & Forage · 22 Fruit · 23 Vegetable · 24 Greenhouse & Florist · 25 Nursery, Ornamentals & Turf
At least 2.5 credits must be specific to the category. The remaining 7.5 may be Core, category-specific, or any combination.
Please note: private applicators cannot earn all of their recertification credits in one calendar year — credits must be spread across more than one year.
