Turf Insect Management

Welcome to this CEU on Turf Insect Management. The purpose of this recertification CEU is to be used as an essential information source for the identification and management of insect pests in turfgrass. As such, all treatment decisions must be formulated within the framework of the site and its management standard where they will be applied. Special attention must be given to correct pest identification, scouting and action thresholds, and applicator judgment, including the distinction between insect damage and the many other causes of turf decline. Go ahead and get started!

Learning Objectives:

The following is a list of the key points to be discussed within this course.

  • Identify and explain how turf insects are classified by where they feed on the plant.

  • Mention and explain the major white grub species, their life cycles, and their action thresholds.

  • Explain the types and importance of scouting methods, including the soap flush, flotation test, and crown pull test.

  • Describe how to distinguish insect damage from disease, drought, and other causes of turf decline.

  • Describe cultural, biological, and chemical control measures, including insecticide timing and resistance management.
